A simple but essential initiative was undertaken by the members of the Board of Directors of the Association of Rental Apartments, Rooms and Tourist Furnished Residences of Chios towards the end of September, with the aim of improving the image of one of the first points of reception for visitors to the island: the “Omiros” airport.
As part of the Association’s actions to upgrade critical tourist infrastructure, its members carried out an inspection of the airport’s exterior. There, they found once again that, despite the existence of planters that had been constructed months ago, the area remained bare of any planting — giving an image that was far from the aesthetics that a tourist destination like Chios deserves.
Determined to act immediately, the members of the Association decided to undertake the planting themselves, donating resistant plants with flowers that thrive in summer and autumn. Although the nursery offered to carry out the work pro bono, the members of the Board of Directors preferred to personally undertake both the planting and the watering, wanting to set an example of active participation and interest in their place.
The planters, with a total length of 34 meters, now host new plants that, when they grow, will compose a pleasant, green setting on the facade of the building, offering a more beautiful and welcoming image to those arriving or departing from the island.
This intervention, although small-scale, comes to remind us of the importance of small actions that can bring about big changes. It shows that caring for the aesthetics and functionality of public spaces does not always require large resources — but rather initiative, collaboration, and love for the place.
