MOMUS Air, the new museum opening at “Macedonia” Airport

The Ministry of Culture, the Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMUS), and Fraport Greece announce the official opening of MOMUS Air, a new museum created at Thessaloniki “Macedonia” Airport, now operating in the airport’s departures area.

The strategic partnership between MOMUS and Fraport Greece aims to create a new cultural space within the airport, enhancing the city’s overall image and offering a distinctive travel experience. It is worth noting that entry for visitors is free of charge.

The airport as a contemporary destination

MOMUS Air offers a new, original cultural experience that connects art, technology, and contemporary lifestyle, precisely at the point where every journey begins or ends. In a 163 sq.m. space, specially designed with a contemporary aesthetic and advanced technological equipment, MOMUS Air hosts visual artworks, digital creations, video walls, and documentaries that showcase the valuable material of MOMUS’ five museums.

The presence of the museum enhances the travel experience, transforming it into a creative and pleasant moment that adds a different dimension to the journey. With the arrival of MOMUS Air at Thessaloniki “Macedonia” Airport, Fraport Greece strengthens its vision of airports that function not only as gateways, but also as destinations, spaces of culture, and unique experiences. Through MOMUS Air, the Ministry of Culture once again confirms its policy priority of promoting the outward-looking character of the bodies under its supervision, with actions and activities reaching ever-expanding audiences.

An open, vibrant cultural space

MOMUS Air is a dynamic meeting point between art and the airport’s international audience, presenting exhibitions connected to contemporary issues and utilizing new technologies. It creates a space where travelers, even within just a few minutes, can be inspired and discover something new. It is not simply a display of art, but an open “gateway to culture” — a museum without walls that accompanies visitors on their journey, offering a moment of reflection, aesthetics, and creative disruption.

The Minister of Culture, Ms. Lina Mendoni, stated:
“MOMUS Air is an excellent example of how Culture can meet everyday life and accompany citizens even at the most unexpected points of their journey. This initiative strengthens the outward orientation of contemporary Greek creativity and turns Thessaloniki Airport into a vibrant gateway to culture. The exhibition space transforms the departures area into a cultural landmark, linking mobility with the experience of contemporary art. I congratulate and thank MOMUS and Fraport Greece for their important collaboration, which highlights Thessaloniki, a city that is steadily and systematically evolving into a leading cultural destination, investing in creativity, innovation, and the dissemination of its strong multicultural identity.”

The CEO of Fraport Greece, Mr. Alexander Zinell, noted:
“At Fraport Greece, we work consistently to continuously enhance the traveler experience at all airports under our management. Our collaboration with MOMUS and the operation of MOMUS Air at Thessaloniki ‘Macedonia’ Airport reinforce this commitment, offering visitors a high-quality cultural space as part of their journey. Airports can function as destinations in their own right, and MOMUS Air is a characteristic example of this approach.”

The President of MOMUS, Mr. Epameinondas Christofilopoulos, emphasized:
“MOMUS Air would not have become a reality without the tangible support of the Ministry of Culture, which consistently supports our mission. Warm thanks are also due to Fraport Greece for the excellent collaboration and for granting such a central location at the largest airport in Northern Greece. With this new cultural gateway, MOMUS strengthens its outward orientation, showcases contemporary Greek creativity to an international audience, and contributes substantially to enhancing Thessaloniki’s image.”

MOMUS Air is part of the project “Strengthening Digital Projects and Cultural Exports of MOMUS” and is implemented within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0,” funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

The contractor for the MOMUS Air project was TETRAGON Consulting and Construction S.A., which held overall responsibility for the design and implementation of the Digital Museum.
