Telegraph: 13 best adventure cruise destinations – 2 in Greece

Volos and Chania in Greece are among Europe’s most adventurous cruise destinations, according to British newspaper Telegraph which notes the following:

One worthwhile spot is Volos in Greece, which pops up occasionally on itineraries with Princess Cruises and Crystal Cruises, for example. Volos itself is a large modern port but there are two excellent excursion destinations from here. The short one is to Makrynitsa, high on a balcony of the thickly-forested Mount Pelion peninsula; it’s an exquisite little village with marvellous views down over Volos and the Gulf of Pagastikos from the lovely tree-shaded square. If time permits, the “big one” is a trip inland to Meteora, an astonishing place where medieval monasteries teeter at the tops of gargantuan rock pillars. Also in Greece, another recommendation is Chania on the north-west coast of Crete, one of the country’s most handsome towns, with cafes and craft shops clustered around the old Venetian harbour – try Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean if this appeals. Another Greek island creeping on to more mainstream itineraries (Holland America, for example) is Cephalonia, a largely unspoilt place with a clutch of attractions including a mysterious underground lake (with boat trips), the glorious Myrtos beach, picturesque fishing villages and an authentic little capital, Argostoli.”

The remaining destinations adventurous cruise destinations are located in the following countries: Croatia, Albania, Italy, Spain, North Africa and Corsica.
