Anna Karamanli | Crete is steadily strengthening its position on the cruise map

“Maritime tourism and especially cruising are sectors of strategic importance for the country’s tourism policy. They have the potential to strengthen regional development, contribute to the extension of the tourist season, and create multiplier benefits for local communities and the national economy,” noted Deputy Minister of Tourism Anna Karamanli at the 8th Posidonia Sea Tourism Forum, where she represented Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

She focused in particular on the development prospects of Heraklion, stating that Crete is steadily strengthening its position on the cruise map. In 2024, the port of Heraklion is ranked 5th among the top Greek destinations, while the Region of Crete recorded a 32.4% increase in passenger arrivals.

Regarding the initiatives of the Ministry of Tourism, he emphasized:

“Through the Recovery and Resilience Fund, we are allocating 139 million euros to upgrade tourist ports across the country. 30 investment projects have already been approved, with an emphasis on sustainability and accessibility.”
