The first signals for the cruise industry in Corfu in 2025 are extremely positive, as shown by the official aggregate data of the Corfu Port Authority (O.L.K.E. S.A.) for the period January-April. The island’s port continues to strengthen its position as one of the top cruise destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean, with an increase in both approaches and passenger traffic, demonstrating its potential in a sector crucial for the local economy.
Specifically, during the first four months of the year, 64 cruise ship arrivals were recorded at the port of Corfu, compared to 36 in the corresponding period of 2024, recording an increase of over 77%. Even more impressive is the increase in the number of passengers, which reached 89,000 from 49,667 last year, recording an increase of 79%.
This upward trend reinforces the strategy of the OLKE to extend the tourist season and attract quality tourism. Indicative of the new dynamic is the fact that this year began with the first cruise ship approach as early as January 3, effectively marking the start of operation of Corfu as a cruise destination throughout the year.
Looking forward to the continuation of this trend, the Port Authority has scheduled 111 cruise ship arrivals for the critical period of October – December 2025, with expected passenger traffic that will exceed 180,000 passengers. This is a bet that, if won, will further consolidate the position of the port of Corfu on the global map of cruise destinations.
The economic footprint of this development is also reflected in the results of the recent study presented at the Organization’s conference entitled “Port of Corfu: Gateway to Development in the Local Society and Economy. The Contribution of Cruises”, in collaboration with the Democritus University of Thrace. The research showed that the total added value of the port’s operation and cruise activity for the period 2023-2024 exceeded 190 million euros — an amount that is expected to increase significantly in 2025, if the current course continues.
In a statement, the CEO of the OLKE, Mr. Spyros Zervopoulos, underlined the importance of these results, stating:
“The impressive launch of the cruise at the port of Corfu in the first months of 2025 is a clear indication that our port continues to steadily gain trust internationally, and Corfu is the country’s most important gateway from the West. With targeted partnerships, infrastructure upgrades, and an emphasis on the passenger experience, we are strengthening the role of Corfu as a pillar of development and tourism promotion of the wider region, strengthening its economy.”
The steady confidence shown by international shipping companies in Corfu, by including it in new routes, confirms the strategic role of the port as a hub of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Adriatic. With the support of infrastructure and the continuous upgrading of the services provided, the port of Corfu is shaping up to be a key link in the cruise tourism chain, with a positive impact not only on the maritime transport sector but also on local entrepreneurship.
2025 is expected, according to the OLKE, to be a landmark year for Corfu, both in terms of the quantity and quality of tourist traffic through cruises, with the port establishing itself on the international map as a “development gateway” for the wider region.
