Almost 400,000 cruise passengers in Chania in 2025 – The ultra-luxury Emerald Azura sailed to Souda

Almost 400,000 cruise passengers have visited Chania in 2025, a number that confirms the rapid rise of the destination on the international cruise map. This milestone was accompanied today by the arrival of the ultra-luxury small cruise ship Emerald Azura, which sailed this morning to the port of Souda carrying 49 passengers.

With this arrival, cruise ship arrivals in Chania have reached 200 since the beginning of the year, reflecting the dynamic course of 2025 and the establishment of the destination as a stable point of reference in the Eastern Mediterranean.

As published in Tornos News, between January 1 and October 31, 2025, 173 calls were recorded at Souda with 382,389 passengers, while 21 ships docked at the Venetian port with 8,611 passengers. Today’s addition of the Emerald Azura, a luxury yacht-style vessel with five-star services, further strengthens this year’s cruise footprint in Chania.

At this point, it should be emphasized that, as the president of the Chania Port Fund, Yiannis Virirakis, has pointed out, this year’s performance is not accidental but the result of a targeted strategy and collaborations with the largest companies in the industry. As he pointed out, “Chania has now established itself as an experience destination, with high levels of passenger and crew satisfaction, while an even greater increase in arrivals is expected for 2026.”

It is worth noting that Souda now attracts ships of all categories, from mega cruises to small boutique yachts, strengthening the local economy, catering and hospitality businesses of the wider area.

At the same time, the ongoing upgrade of infrastructure and the extension of the cruise season are key axes of the strategy that the Port Fund and the municipality of Chania have outlined, with the aim of Chania remaining at the forefront of tourism development in the coming years.
