Agios Nikolaos, Crete, officially concluded its cruise season today with the arrival of Phoenix Reisen’s Artania, which sailed with 1,062 guests, under ideal weather conditions and a temperature of 24°C. The visit took place on one of the most pleasant days of the year, in the middle of autumn, thus confirming the extension of the tourist season in the region.
Passengers had the opportunity to get to know Lake Voulismeni, tour Spinalonga, visit the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos, as well as local olive mills and wineries. Cretan gastronomy impressed visitors, while the city – just a stone’s throw from the port – offered easy access to shops, caf?s and cultural attractions.
Operational milestone for the port
The operational test that took place during today’s arrival was of particular importance. The port safely accommodated the 230-meter Artania at the small 140-meter pier, thanks to the new bumpers that were recently put into operation. The test was deemed successful, confirming the technical readiness and adaptability of the infrastructure.
The upgrade works continue, as from 2026 Agios Nikolaos will be able to serve two cruise ships simultaneously, with independent passenger flows and high-level services.
20% increase this year – Over 40% increase in 2026
This year’s cruise season ends with a positive sign of over 20%, confirming the continued growth of the destination. For 2026, an expected increase of over 40% in ship and passenger arrivals has already been recorded, with Agios Nikolaos evolving into one of the most interesting emerging destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Further development will be based on strategic planning, capacity management and the provision of high-quality services to visitors.
Statements by the Mayor and President of the Port Fund
The Mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Mr. Manolis Menegakis, noted: “Agios Nikolaos is steadily strengthening its position on the cruise map. Our goal is for every visitor to live an authentic experience and leave with the desire to return. The expected increase next year confirms the companies’ confidence in the region’s potential.”
The President of the Port Fund, Mr. Dimitris Agapitos, stated: “Today’s arrival confirms the port’s operational readiness. We are investing in infrastructure and services that meet the needs of modern cruises. From 2026, we will serve two ships simultaneously, which will significantly enhance the development of the destination.”
Port officials welcomed the Artania officers, exchanged gifts and wished them a safe journey.
New VIP homeporting system
The Port Fund – in collaboration with cruise consultant Mr. Ioannis Bra and Five Senses Consulting – is proceeding with the design of a new VIP homeporting system. This system will directly connect the airport to the port, ensuring fast and seamless access to the cruise ship.
