Waterways in the lakes of Western Macedonia: A new chapter for tourism and development

With the conclusion of the Program Agreement between the Region of Western Macedonia and ANKO Western Macedonia S.A. – Local Government Development Organization, the way is opened for the licensing and operation of waterways in four landmark lakes of the region: Orestiada (Kastoria), Prespes, Vegoritida and Polyfytos. The project concerns the preparation of technical files and environmental impact studies, necessary for the approval of the establishment of waterways, which aspire to transform Western Macedonia into a modern hub of alternative transport, tourism and innovation.

Alternative tourism and promotion of natural wealth

According to the content of the contract, the development of waterways gives a new dimension to the tourist identity of Western Macedonia, taking advantage of the unique water wealth of the region. The lakeside Kastoria, Prespes with its rare biodiversity, Vegoritida with the picturesque villages that surround it and Polyphytos with its impressive water landscape, can become reference points for ecotourism, walking and nature-loving activities. At the same time, the proximity to monuments of religious interest and the gastronomic traditions of the region create the conditions for organized tourist packages starting from the waterways.

New transportation options and social value

Furthermore, the operation of seaplanes will offer a fast and affordable connection for visitors, residents and professionals, while strengthening social cohesion. Special emphasis is placed on their operational value for airlifts and hospital flights, providing an additional safety net for local communities. In addition, the possibility of using seaplanes in aerial firefighting and search and rescue operations makes the new infrastructure a valuable tool for civil protection.

Economic development and new jobs

The creation of waterways is not limited to facilitating travel but is expected to boost the local economy. Increased tourist traffic can boost the market, accommodation and catering, while new jobs will be created in sectors such as maintenance, navigation, tourism businesses and alternative leisure activities.

Environmental dimension

According to international studies, seaplanes are ranked among the most environmentally friendly means of transport, with a low footprint and without the need for extensive infrastructure. In Western Macedonia, where lakes are strictly protected ecosystems, the operation of waterways will follow strict ecological rules, reinforcing the sign of green development.

Strategic position and international prospects

With the waterways, Western Macedonia gains a strategic advantage, as it can be integrated into a connectivity network with the Balkans. The interconnection with areas of Albania, such as Pogradec, and North Macedonia, such as Ohrid, offers new international routes, while at the same time opening up avenues for European funding related to sustainable and green transport.

A step forward

The implementation of this specific initiative is not limited only to the construction of infrastructure, but attempts to redefine the relationship of Western Macedonia with its lakes. By utilizing aquatic ecosystems, the region has the opportunity to emerge as a model of combining tourism development, economic progress and environmental protection.
