US and EU call for Russia-Ukraine conflict de-escalation

The US and the EU have called on Russia and Ukraine to de-escalate tensions between themselves, reports said on Saturday.

Along the lines of the framework to work at de-escalating the tension, US Vice-President Joe Biden met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and with officials in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on his part has accused Kiev of attempting to destabilise Crimea, which was seized by Russia in 2014, while the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has pointed a finger at Moscow for preparing mass threats.

In Brussels however, the head of EU Diplomacy Federica Mogherini has reiterated the bloc’s support to Ukraine on the Crimea issue, while inviting Moscow and Kiev to avoid any action that could escalate tensions.

After meeting with Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Pavlo Klimkin, Mogherini said that the EU has condemned and does not recognise the annexation of Crimea.

Our support to territorial integrity and Ukraine’s national sovereignty are unchanged,” Mogherini said.

She added that any action that could lead to the escalation of the conflict needs to be avoided as only a peaceful settlement of the issue is the only possible solution.
