Cypriot president congratulates national soccer team after beating Turkey

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has congratulated the island’s Under-21 national football team after they defeated Turkey 1-0 in Ankara on Thursday night.

In a tweet, Anastasiades wrote: “Congratulations to our youngsters for their victory in Ankara over the Turkish national team.”

His tweet closed with Anastasiades wishing the side good luck towards achieving UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualification.

Omonia youngster Fanos Katelaris scored the winner at Ankara’s Osmanli Stadi with a direct free-kick in the 22nd minute.

Katelaris’ goal sparked ecstatic celebrations among the Cyprus Under-21 players and coaching staff at the final whistle.

However, after the final whistle, police had to get involved as members from the Turkey Under-21 side reacted angrily to the result.

The referee sent six players off after the final whistle due to the scuffle, three players from each team.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

UN-led peace talks, aimed at reuniting the island under a federal roof, resumed in May 2015 between Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
