India train derailment kills at least 100 and injures as many (video)

At least 100 people were killed and over 100 injured when 14 Indore-Patna Express coaches derailed near Pukhrayan, Kanpur Dehat district, India on Sunday.

The tragic accident took place at around 3am (local time) near Pukhrayan, when the passengers were fast asleep, reported The Times of India.

Rescue operations were underway since early morning and the death toll is expected to rise, according to railways officials.

Though the cause of the is not known as of now, sources told TOI the nature and timing shows that the accident was caused by a rail fracture. However, the exact reason would be known only after an inquiry.

Stranded passengers were moved to nearby Malasa train station, while the injured were taken to Kanpur Dehat Hospital.

 have been asked to be on alert, more than 30 ambulances were pressed into service, and over 250 police officials were carrying out the rescue and relief operations, reported TOI.

offered his condolences to the bereaved on Twitter.

Railways Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu also tweeted that an inquiry was ordered into the accident and that “strict action will be taken against all those responsible.”

Home Minister Rajnath Singh offered his condolences saying he was “deeply pained” by the loss of lives and that his thoughts are with the bereaved families.
