The suspected perpetrator behind the Berlin Christmas market attack, Anis Amri, was killed during a shootout in Milan, Italy’s Interior Minister Angelino Alfano confirmed on Friday.
Alfano told a press conference: “Without any doubts the person shot by the police was the Berlin attack suspect Anis Amri,” reported Deutsche Welle.
“We can guarantee we are doing everything we can to keep the country safe,” added Alfano.
Italy’s state run news agency, ANSA, initially reported that the person killed was indeed Amri.
La Repubblica published a video showing a dead body on the road with investigators collecting evidence.
Shootout in Milano
The shootout took place at Milan’s Sesto San Giovanni municipality area.
According to La Repubblica, the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God Is Greatest) before two officers shot him when he refused to show them his identification documents.
Deutsche Welle reported that one officer was injured with a shoulder wound after the shooting when Amri shot without warning, before being killed by a young officer.
According to Amri ‘s brother via phone to DW on his death: “We are shocked and the whole family is in a bad situation. No comment.”
Italy PM Paolo Gentiloni said he personally told Chancellor Angela Merkel that Amri was killed, according to dpa.
Earlier on Friday, German investigators were working on the assumption that the Tunisian, who had previously been under surveillance by German security agencies, was still hiding in the capital, according to Tagesspiegel.
German Police had issued a 100,000-euro reward for information leading to Amri’s capture.
