European Tourism | Overnight stays near 3 billion in 2024

The estimated number of nights spent in tourist accommodation in the EU reached 2.99 billion in 2024, exceeding the previous year by 53.4 million, or 2%., according to Eurostat data.

The increase in nights spent was mainly due to stays by international visitors (+58.7 million), while nights spent by domestic visitors recorded a moderate decrease (-5.3 million). In 2024, EU tourist nights were fairly balanced between international (48%) and domestic visitors (52%).

In terms of accommodation type, hotels, and similar accommodations recorded 1.9 billion overnight stays (63% of the total), followed by holiday homes and other short-stay accommodations with 711 million (24%) and campsites with 396 million (13%).

Tourism is growing in most EU countries

Compared to 2023, in 2024 the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation increased in almost all EU countries. The largest increases were recorded in Luxembourg (+22%), Malta (+13%) and Latvia (+7%).

Small decreases were recorded in France and Belgium (-1% in each of these countries), while figures remained stable in Sweden, Finland and Italy. Greece had a small increase, below 3%.
