WTTC Summit in Rome: Governments and tourism giants chart the global roadmap

The 25th World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Summit took centre stage today, with the iconic Global Leaders’ Dialogue. The meeting brought together tourism ministers and heads of global tourism industry giants to seek common solutions to the sector’s major challenges.

The opening remarks were made by WTTC’s interim CEO, Gloria Guevara, and Italy’s Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanch?, who highlighted the need to strengthen public-private partnerships for tourism sustainability and resilience.

Europe: Lessons for the World

The first session highlighted the continued attractiveness of Europe, which continues to be the world’s leading tourist destination. According to the latest WTTC Economic Impact Report, in 2025 tourism in Europe is expected to contribute €2.6 trillion to GDP – 10% of the continent – ??and support 41.3 million jobs.

The discussions focused on:

Strategies for differentiating Europe from competing regions.

Balancing innovation and authenticity with a view to sustainability.

Managing the EU’s complex governance framework.

Examples of pioneering sustainability initiatives and new destination management models were also presented.

Towards a “seamless travel” experience

The second session was dedicated to the free and seamless movement of travellers. The interventions highlighted the crucial role of political visas, border management and biometric technology.

Among the proposals:

Adopting e-visas and biometric identification.

Integrated payment and connectivity systems.

Adapting solutions for new generations of travelers and people with disabilities.

Speakers called on governments and businesses to work more closely to implement digital solutions that will improve the travel experience at all stages – from planning to arrival.

Collective action and shared responsibility

The main conclusion of the Dialogue was the need for collective action. As Gloria Guevara emphasized: “From Europe’s lessons on sustainability and competitiveness, to global solutions for seamless travel, it is clear that through partnerships we are unlocking the full potential of the sector.”

The discussion was held with the participation of leading executives of international giants (Accor, Hilton, The Travel Corporation, VFS Global, etc.) and high-ranking political representatives from Italy, Malta, Bulgaria, Portugal, Japan, Turkey and the Bahamas, among others.

The 25th WTTC Summit is hosted in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Tourism, the national organization ENIT, the Municipality of Rome and the Lazio Region, while it is supported by leading international industry partners.
