Fourth metro line announced for greater Athens area

The first portion of a fourth metro line in the greater Athens area will be tendered in the first five months of 2017, according to the relevant infrastructure ministry.

The semi-circular line is expected to pass underneath some of the more densely built areas of the Greek capital.

The total cost was placed at 3.5 billion euros, with the first portion budgeted at 1.5 billion euros. In announcing the infrastructure project, relevant minister Christos Spirtzis didn’t clarify, however, whether funding for the entire timetable of construction has been guaranteed – a necessary condition for the tender to proceed.

The qualification is more than necessary, given that a project to build a one-line metro system in the northern city of Thessaloniki has been delayed for decades.

The greater Athens area contains nearly half the residents in the country of 11 million.
