Syros Neorion shipyards workers discuss acquisition deal with minister

The union representing employees of Neorion Shipyards, on the Greek island of Syros, met on Wednesday with Shipping Minister Panos Kouroumblis to discuss ways to unblock the sale of the troubled company to a foreign investor who has reportedly submitted an offer.

The union informed the minister that the main conditions set by the potential investor is the payment of accrued wages, the payment of the shipyard’s debts to suppliers and the write-off of any other outstanding debts.

It mentioned  employees are being “held hostage” by the company which hasn’t paid them between 18 and 25 wages, making the situation critical and creating a social problem in Syros, whose economy depends heavily on the shipyard.

The employees suggested a write-off for debts towards the state but Kouroumblis rejected any proposal for a haircut for social security funds, saying nevertheless he would study and discuss the acquisition proposal with other ministers.
