IPTO has secured enough power to boost launching offshore wind parks in Greece

IPTO has secured the required electrical capacity of 2 GW to facilitate the launch of the “nationally important new market of offshore wind parks in Greece,” noted Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) Chairman & CEO Manousos Manousakis on Thursday, ANA reports.

Manousakis was addressing a workshop titled ‘Offshore Wind in Greece – Prospects & Challenges for the Supply Chain & Sustainable Growth’, held by the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (HWEA).

The long-term planning for developing 12 GW renewable energy projects in coming decades reveals the need for export-oriented, cross-border interconnections launched by IPTO, he added. This way, green energy surpluses produced by offshore wind parks can be transported to central European markets, he added.

Included in this framework are projects such as the second Greece-Bulgaria electrical interconnection that was recently concluded, Manousakis stressed, the second Greece-Italy interconnection, the Greece (Crete)-Cyprus-Israel interconnection, but also the Green Aegean Interconnector project that will connect Greece to south Germany.
