The development program (Master Plan) of the port of Thessaloniki was approved with the publication of the relevant Presidential Decree (Government Gazette 18/A/10.02.2025). Through this, both the updated Master Plan and the necessary Strategic Environmental Impact Study are approved. In this way, the opportunity is given to ThPA S.A. to satisfy its obligations, without delays, as they arise from the concession agreement.
Based on the terms of the said agreement, ThPA S.A. is obliged to implement investments worth 180 million. euros, starring the emblematic expansion project of the 6th Pier, an intervention that will multiply the capacity of the port. Among other things, the technical program of the Port of Thessaloniki SA includes the project “Restoration and Development of the Facilities of the Old Customs Station”, as well as projects of improvement, repair, maintenance, upgrading, and reconstruction of the existing infrastructure of the port.
The Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Mr. Christos Stylianides, stated in this regard:
“The issuance of the Presidential Decree approving the development program (Master Plan) of the port of Thessaloniki, constitutes a milestone for the history and the future of the port of Thessaloniki. It is the beginning of a new era that foresees investments of millions of euros, which – in the coming years – are expected to ensure a favorable course for the economy and employment of workers, both at the local and national level. Thessaloniki plays a significant role in the “Maritime Egnatia” but also in the formulation of the National Port Policy, as implemented by the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy and the General Secretariat of Shipping and Ports. We aspire for Thessaloniki to play a leading role as the main port of the Balkans.”
It is noted that for the implementation of the synthesis of the scientific and administrative process of drafting and issuing the said Presidential Decree, executives from the Port of Thessaloniki and the Superfund (formerly HRADF), which functioned as the “Planning Authority,” collaborated.
The Port Planning and Development Committee (PSDC) issued the initial approval of the Master Plan in February 2023, while the draft Presidential Decree was submitted to the Council of State (CoS) for pre-audit in August 2024. The coordination, processing and promotion of the entire process was carried out by the executives of the General Secretariat of Shipping and Ports of the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy.
