Six axes of action on how to enhance the attractiveness of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace were presented and discussed, within the framework of the 3rd Forum for East Macedonia and Thrace taking place on 26 and 27 February in Alexandroupolis.
Specifically, Gwendaline Jossec, Senior Economist & Policy Analyst of the OECD, undertook and prepared a special report on the development of selected regions of Europe, including East Macedonia & Thrace, with the main conclusions being presented in the forum proceedings.
“We are here to help the regions attract investors and visitors,” she emphasized, among other things, during the discussion she had with MEGA journalist Panagiotis Fotinos (photo), before listing the six main axes of her recommendations.
Initially, she referred to the exploitation of the commercial potential of the port of Alexandroupolis, explaining that a well-functioning and functional port is an important part of the effort for investments. She attached particular importance to both the increase in local connectivity and to Europe’s broader defense spending in the region.
She then underlined the importance of attracting investments with tax incentives, which will be aligned with the needs of the region. At the same time, she focused on the need to attract, train, and retain talent so that young people do not leave the region.
Tourism is key to development
In addition, he referred to attracting visitors, noting that tourism is a key opportunity for the region.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening governance, with cooperation and coordination between government and private sector people. Finally, he pointed out the need to strengthen regional and local governments, as, as he explained, the people of the region are the ones who act to solve local problems.
The conference is organized by City Hub Events of the Alter Ego group and Tsomokos Communication, with the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace as a strategic partner.
