The Municipality of Kissamos is taking a big step towards development, harmonizing with the rhythms of western Crete. At the recent meeting of the Port Committee, the new master plan for the port of Kavonisi was presented and approved. It was designed to meet the growing demands of maritime tourism.
The study foresees the creation of a marina for 70 boats, of which 18 will be 30-meter mega yachts, moorings for day boats and fishing boats, new buildings, a waterway, and parking areas. At the same time, it includes the deepening and widening of the port basin, the construction of a new 115-meter pier on the eastern side, and the extension of the existing pier by 160 meters to the north.
The project, with a budget of 36 million euros, is expected to cover the needs of the region for the next 50 years, making Kissamos an alternative port to Souda, which, according to experts’ estimates, is heading towards saturation.
The next challenge for the region’s stakeholders is finding financial resources for the implementation of this ambitious project, which, in combination with the VOAK, will transform Kissamos, highlighting its unexplored geographical and natural relief.
