Crete: 13 new water supply projects in municipalities on the island

13 new projects to upgrade and expand water supply infrastructure in Crete are on track for implementation, following the decision of the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, to include them in the Regional Program “Crete 2021-2027”. The projects are co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and have a total budget of 11,272,988.46 euros.

The interventions concern a wide geographical range of Crete and are implemented by Municipalities and Municipal Water Supply Companies. The main objective is to reduce water losses from old and worn-out networks, to meet the growing demand for drinking water, to strengthen the water supply of areas with residential development, and to construct new water transport networks.

The projects included concern, among others:

  • The improvement of water supply in the city and suburban areas of the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos.
  • The creation of new water supply systems in settlements in the Municipality of Minoas Pediada.
  • The replacement of networks in large areas of the Municipality of Chania, the Municipality of Malevizi, and the Municipalities of Souda, Nea Kydonia, Therissos, and Keramia.
  • Interventions in smaller settlements, such as Treis Ekklisies (Municipality of Archanes – Asterousia), Kokkino Chori,o and the settlements of the Municipality of Episkopi in the Municipality of Hersonissos.
  • The upgrading of the Tylisos aqueduct and the construction of pipelines in areas such as the Municipality of Platanias and the Municipality of Sitia.

As stated by the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, “the Region continues to consistently invest in critical infrastructure that protects the environment, ensures the sustainable management of water resources and improves the daily lives of citizens.”

The inclusion of these projects in the new NSRF is part of the strategy of the Region of Crete for green development, resilience to environmental challenges, and enhancing the quality of life in the island’s urban and rural networks.
