South Aegean Region approved a Programme Contract with Rhodes Holy Diocese for “Development of research to identify and record all churches and Orthodox religious heritage monuments located on the island of Rhodes and built before 1930.”
In addition to the systematic recording of monuments in a database, a list of criteria will be drawn up according to which sites will be assessed and categorized in standard groups, depending on their type, dating, accessibility etc.
Strategic planning
The aim of the program is to provide a clear picture of the amount, extent, geographic spread and density of monuments on the island of Rhodes. This research is expected to greatly help in the strategic planning of the development of thematic tourism on the island, with particular emphasis on religious tourism, which seems to be rapidly growing along the country.
The survey’s data should also help to properly manage and promote cultural goods, utilize local cultural resources, safeguard, preserve and study ecclesiastical wealth, as well as enhance independent economic activities that are supported by the cultural and tourism product of the island.
The project’s budget will amount to 85,000 euros including VAT.
