Forbes: Hydra among secret getaways of the Art World's super rich

Hydra island in Greece is among the secret getaways for the art world’s super rich, according to the following article by Forbes magazine:

Between hopping from Basel to Beirut for glitzy parties, invite-only dinners and champagne-fueled art fairs, the great and good of the art world escape to select getaways. Besides mandatory summers spent on megayachts and winters in St. Barts, the super rich gravitate to unlikely art meccas from otherworldly islands in Japan to a tropical forest in Brazil. “These are the ultimate escapes, not just from the commercial art scene, but in a sense from reality,” says art consultant Greg McNamara.

Places with a far-flung mystique such as the Siwa Oasis in Egypt or Antarctica tend to be appealing says collector Kyoko Tamura. Katherine Schaefer who helms Simon Lee Gallery in Hong Kong echoes this sentiment. “Progressive collectors are adventurous,” she exclaims, giving the example of art patron groups trekking out to Iran.

Others cite different motives: “There is an irresistible need to be seen,” says Pascal de Sarthe, founder of de Sarthe Gallery. “At times the art world can be very self-centered and in search of constant recognition among peers.” Moreover, in the murky, unregulated art trade, socializing and forging relationships is essential. As art adviser Jehan Chu sums up, “The high-end art world tends to vacation in one of two places: where their clients are likely to vacation, or where there’s art.” Here are four of the art set’s favorite spots“:

Specifically about Hyrdra?, the article mentions:

This gorgeous Greek island has a reputation for celebrity-studded art soirees. During the summer lull in the art calendar, mega collectors, dealers and scensters takeover the tranquil harbor town. Asked why people are drawn spots like this, Tamura sums it up as “Beauty, design, glamorous people, but also being able to network even during the holidays.”
