Authorities: Sixth bear killed in road accident in northern Greece

Greek authorities on Monday reported the death of yet another bear killed by oncoming traffic on Greek roads this year – the sixth so far in 2017 – following yet another accident on the Egnatia highway near Siatista, Kozani in northern Greece.

The latest victim was a female brown bear weighing about 100 kilos, which died immediately when it was hit by a car. The driver was pulled free of the vehicle unharmed but the car was written off.

According to the environmental groups Callisto and Arcturos, which focus on bear conservation, the latest incident “highlights the need to intervene with works to fence off and avert the entry of large mammals onto the road network, as has happened at other points along the Egnatia Highway, while taking measures that allow wildlife to safely cross the motorway.”

This is the third accident in the Siatista-Kozani area within five years and occurred very close to the spot where a young female bear was killed by a truck just days before. The location is between two mountain ranges that are both bear habitats and, according to environmental groups, it forms a “natural passage” for wild animals.

They once again recommended to motorists driving through this part of the country to exercise extreme caution and abide by speed limits, especially at night and in the early morning.
