PM: Greek state saved €764 million by renegotiating four highway projects

Greek government is looking after the public’s interest and saved the Greek state 764 million euros through the renegotation of four highway projects, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday in a tweet.

“The government battled to protect the public interest and to complete the large highways of Greece which faced complicated issues,” he wrote, adding that “from the renegotiation of the four highway axes the Greek public benefitted to the extent of 764 million euros.”

Tsipras’ tweet is accompanied by a video on the projects, which is uploaded with extra information on the prime minister’s official site (primeminister.gr).

The Greek state benefited by 764,477,733 euros from the renegotiation of the Ionia Odos, Olympia Odos, E65 and Moreas contracts, the site said. Furthermore, delays in the timetable of completion for all four would have forced Greece to return billions of euros of funding to the EU, if the projects – which were signed off in 2006-7 and 2013-14 – had been left incomplete.
