Greek university rectors offer security-for-funding deal to government

With some reluctance to bank a plan to put security forces on campus and tighter security at Greek universities, rectors are offering to support it if the New Democracy government doesn’t reduce financial support.

The Rectors’ Synod said it will go along with the measures as long as the expected drop in admissions does not affect funding, which is determined by the number of students admitted.

With some schools seeing fewer students the rectors don’t want to lose any of the money that goes to them, which could also happen if grading becomes more lenient. especially at regional institutions like the universities of Western Macedonia, the Ionian, Democritus of Thrace, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean, which is on Crete.

The council reaffirmed its position on the issue for the need for a minimum grade but insisted funding, especially for regional universities, remains intact, said Kathimerini.

The government had received a letter from some academics demanding more security after assaults and violence on school grounds, including an attack on one rector who had a sign hung around his neck supporting squatters.
