Ancient Greek statues discovered near Athens Airport

During recent excavations near Athens International Airport, east of the capital, two ancient Greek statues of female figures were uncovered from inside a white burial monument.

The announcement was made by Greece’s Culture and Sports Ministry on Sunday.

The grave column was unearthed during routine excavations in the area where construction works to construct the new Town Hall Municipality of Paiania will commence.

The two women in the fragmented sculpture are facing each other: On the right, the woman who is wearing a transparent robe is seated on an elegant seat with her feet resting on a footstool. On the left, in front of her, stands her servant supporting her head on her left hand in sorrow.

The theme of the performance is typical in tomb reliefs dating back to the 4th century BC.

The excavation is continuing and other fragments are likely to be found.
