Global Greek Film Initiative supports professional development in Greece

Backed by The Hellenic Initiative, the Global Greek Film Initiative (GGFI) continues to focus on making connections and helping support the development of the Greek film industry. This year they are supporting OWL, a program especially tailored for international screenwriters who wish to write films that take place in Athens and Greece. The OWL is organized by the Athens Film Office. More information is available online: https://theowl.afo.events.

GGFI is also supporting three more PACT workshops, organized by the Media Producers Association, early next year. Each workshop will train up to 20 young professionals so that they may join the workforce — in location scouting, assistant director positions, camera assistant, and sound department positions.

More information about PACT workshops is available online: https://workshops.pact.gr.

An extraordinary year for Greek and Greek-American filmmakers was also highlighted in the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival and GGFI newsletter which noted Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’ recent Gold Lion win at the Venice Film Festival for Poor Things which stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Dafoe, as well as Nia Vardalos’ My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, filmed in Greece, which is in theaters now.

Also mentioned were Fingernails, the first English-language film by Christos Nikou, set to premiere in Los Angeles and New York on October 27; Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers opening in Los Angeles and New York on November 10; and Lanthimos’ fantastical extravaganza Poor Things, set to be released December 8.

For those interested in queer-themed films, a whole week of online screenings, free with registration, October 9-15, will be announced soon. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more!
