Ski mountaineering in Crete is developing into a tourist product that attracts visitors from abroad and the domestic market. Already, specialized travel agencies specializing in sports tourism offer packages for snow lovers, focusing on Psiloritis and the White Mountains.
Speaking to Tornos News, Eleftheria Kappa, marketing manager of Trekking Hellas Group of Companies, emphasized that ski mountaineering has gained greater appeal, with more and more lovers of the activity looking for new, exciting destinations.
Focusing on Crete, she pointed out that Crete is showing increased interest from both Greeks and foreign visitors. The top choices are the White Mountains and Psiloritis. These mountains offer excellent routes and unique landscapes, combining snow with an endless view of the sea, emphasizes Mrs. Kappa.
Ski mountaineering with a view of the sea
What makes the experience of ski mountaineering in Crete special? But Crete offers something unique: the opportunity to ski on an island with imposing mountains, while also having a view of the sea. The contrast of the snowy landscape with the blue of the Mediterranean creates a setting that is difficult to find elsewhere. In addition, Cretan hospitality, authentic gastronomy, and cultural heritage make the experience even more attractive, says Mrs. Kappa.
It is recalled that Psiloritis every two years is a pole of attraction for athletes and non-athletes of ski mountaineering. Pierra Creta is recalled that it is an “open”, team ski mountaineering competition that takes place every two years in Crete. It consists of two routes, route A with an indicative elevation difference of 1800 m and B with an indicative elevation difference of approximately 900 m. The next race is scheduled for 2026, with the race organizers noting that the race seeks to make mountain skiing known to the people of Crete but also to show those already involved in Greece and abroad that Crete is a place for mountain skiing.
When asked whether the creation of a ski resort in Psiloritis would help in the development of the sport, Ms. Kappa stressed that an organized ski resort could enhance the development of mountain skiing in Crete. However, the implementation of such a project depends on factors such as climate change, the duration and amount of snowfall, as well as the sustainability of such a large investment. Given the economic and geographical challenges, this is a bold move that requires careful consideration.
