On April 12th and 13th, the Ultra Trail Run Agrafa is scheduled to take place at the Neochori Botanical Garden at Lake Plastira, co-organized by the Agrafa Cultural Mountain Running Association, among others.
Specifically, mountain runners can choose between 3 routes of 10, 23, and 42 kilometers, while children will have the opportunity to participate in the “Agrafaki” children’s race, which is 600 meters long.
The purpose of the mountain running race is to stimulate tourism, promote the unique beauty of Lake Plastira, and highlight the history and culture of the region, as runners will complete routes that run along the borders of the former Free Greek State and the then Turkish territory.
The Botanical Garden of Neochori
It is worth noting that, according to the website of the municipality of Lake Plastira, the Botanical Garden of Neochori, which is open daily to visitors, includes shrublands, ecosystems of the region, nurseries with lime and fir trees, wetlands, and aromatic and ornamental plants. In Neochori there is also an unexplored cave called “Dragon’s Hole”, while the location of the village allows for excellent views of the Thessalian plain and the wider area. Among other things, in Neochori, there is a Forestry and Agricultural Cooperative, and there are also campsites.
Lake Plastira, a successful example of intervention in nature
Lake N. Plastira, as a project, bears the stamp of Nikolaos Plastiras, who, from the moment the idea was conceived until his death, supported and promoted its construction with fanaticism. According to the website of the municipality of Limni Plastiras, this undoubtedly great project, with unique benefits for the surrounding areas, was destined to forever mark the place and the landscape. One of the rare cases where a human intervention contributes to the creation of an incomparably beautiful natural environment, which, of course, established the lake as one of the most famous tourist destinations. Snowy or green, autumnal or refreshing, each season seems “different”, offering travelers rare images.
Furthermore, Lake Plastira is the most successful example of human intervention in nature. The harmony and beauty of the landscape give the feeling that the lake is natural, and only when one reaches the dam does one understand that it is the result of a technical project. In recent years, Lake Plastira has been developed for tourism and attracts more and more visitors, who enjoy the beauty of the landscape and the tourist infrastructure, which is developed mainly on the western shores.
