The heroic Psara is betting on hiking tourism with the municipality announcing the securing of funding of 246,598.80 euros for the implementation of the project “Drawing, Marking, Opening and Maintenance of Hiking Routes of the Municipality of the Heroic Island of Psara”.
The project aims to utilize and promote the traditional hiking routes of the island, which are preserved to this day and are inextricably linked to the history, tradition, and natural landscape of Psara. Through the organized development of the hiking network, the development of gentle forms of tourism is enhanced, the historical and cultural heritage is highlighted, and the unique and unspoiled natural environment of the island is protected.
The 9 routes that will be developed include paths that traditionally served the movement of residents for agricultural and livestock activities, as well as routes that lead to inaccessible areas of particular ecological or historical interest.
The project is part of the action “Protection of biodiversity as a driving force for sustainable development” of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan Greece 2.0, with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
The proposal of the Municipality of Heroic Island of Psara was one of 107 proposals that met the criteria and were included in the action “Creation of a national network of hiking trails and routes”, which is funded with a total of 41,224,054.39 euros throughout the country, according to a joint announcement by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Ministry of National Economy and Finance. It should be noted that the municipality achieved its inclusion in the program following an objection since its proposal was not included in the initial approvals.
The Mayor of the heroic island of Psara, Konstantinos Vratsanos, stated: “In Psara, we honor our past, but we work with a vision for the future! This funding is further proof that our island has momentum, perspective, and voice. The hiking trails we will create will constitute a living link between our historical heritage and modern development. With planning, perseverance, and efficiency, we continue to claim and achieve projects that change Psara for the better. I warmly thank everyone who worked hard for this successful result for our island!”.
