Diving Park in Chania: Enchanting underwater adventure on reefs and warships

A historic step for the development of diving tourism in Chania and Crete in general is taking place in the province of Apokoronas.

Specifically, today, Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 10:00 in the morning (and if weather conditions permit), a historic moment will take place for the Greek diving community and marine tourism. In the bay “Ombrosgyalo”, of the Local Community of Kefalas, the mooring of the ship “R/C NESTOR” by the Navy will take place, marking the creation of the first Marine Recreation Diving Park in Greece, the mayor of Apokoronas Charalambos Koukianakis announces.

This initiative is a major milestone in the development of sustainable tourism, the protection of the marine environment and the promotion of the area as a top destination for divers and marine life enthusiasts. The mooring of the “R/C NESTOR”, on a specially demarcated seabed, has been carefully designed to create an artificial reef, enhancing marine biodiversity and offering a unique diving attraction, emphasizes Charalambos Koukianakis.

This is the first of two warships planned to be moored within the framework of the project, which is funded by the Region of Crete. 44 artificial reefs have already been moored, and photobuoys have been installed, creating a protected and organized diving environment. In addition, three diving routes are being created in the park, offering different levels of difficulty and unique experiences for divers of all levels.

The Diving Park in Ombrosgyalos is a pioneering project that combines environmental management with tourism development. Within the framework of the project, all necessary measures have been taken to maintain ecological balance in collaboration with scientific bodies and environmental organizations.

Upon completion of the project, the first Diving Marine Recreation Park in Greece is expected to strengthen the tourist traffic of the area, contribute to the economic development of the region, and offer new opportunities for alternative forms of tourism, with respect for the natural environment.
