On May 18, the Xanthi Trail Run 2025 mountain running race is scheduled to take place in Xanthi, which is co-organized by the Xanthi Athletic Cultural Runners Association, among others.

The purpose of organizing the Xanthi Trail Run is to bring athletes into contact with nature and introduce them to mountain running in the city’s beautiful suburban forest.
The suburban forest of Xanthi is a valuable green lung spread out on the outskirts of the city. Its rich flora includes pines, oaks, and plane trees, while its fauna hosts various species of birds, small mammals, and reptiles. Its trails are ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and various nature-loving activities, making it a popular destination for those who want to enjoy nature.
In addition, along the route, runners will have the opportunity to pass by two historical monasteries in the area. The Holy Monastery of Panagia Archangeliotissa, built in an idyllic location northeast of Xanthi, offers panoramic views of the city and the plain, while it is an important religious and cultural center.
According to available information, the monastery has existed under the same name since 1559. Equally impressive is the Holy Monastery of Panagia Kalamous, known for its architecture and spiritual tradition, offering visitors a unique experience of tranquility and devotion. The name of the monastery comes from the tradition that states that the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found in a reed bed on the banks of the river. Its foundation is likely around the 11th century, according to archaeological findings.
Therefore, passing through these monasteries adds a spiritual dimension to the race, connecting physical activity with the cultural heritage of the region.
