Sports events in Attica in May: running for memory, exercise, and the joy of participation

In May, the municipalities of Attica fill with movement, memory, and collectivity through a series of sports activities with the support of the Attica Region. From running races and tournaments to fitness festivals and inclusion activities, the month’s sports calendar invites young and old to come together, move, and honor ideas and people.

Among others, the following actions have been scheduled to take place:

  • In Kaisariani, on May 3 and 4, the Municipality honors the memory of the 200 fighters who were executed on May Day 1944, through the two-day “Soukatzidia 2025”. 1, 3, and 5 km cross-country races are planned, as well as a 3×3 basketball tournament, in honor of Napoleon Soukatzidis. Participation is estimated to reach 400 people, while spectators are expected to exceed 600.
  • In St. Petersburg, on the weekend of May 10 and 11, the “Nikos Paximadas” indoor gym is planning to host the 1st Gymnastics for All Festival, in collaboration with the Hellenic Gymnastics Federation. Approximately 900 participants are expected to be on the track, with over 3,000 spectators cheering from the stands.
  • In Poros, on the same date, 1, 2, 5, and 10 km running races are planned, with a start from Heroes Square at the Russian naval base. The activities are aimed at students, clubs, and any resident or visitor who wants to participate. The races are dedicated to Demosthenes, with the aim of strengthening the running movement. A total of 1,000 participants and more than 3,000 spectators are expected.
  • On May 18, the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios is planning to establish the Peace Run within the framework of Panagoulias. The races include 10, 5, and 2.5-kilometer routes, as well as a 1,000-meter awareness race for people with disabilities. The event is dedicated to the memory of Alexandros Panagoulis and promotes peace, cooperation, social empathy, and the ideal of sports. Participation is expected to reach 3,200 people, and spectators are expected to exceed 5,000.
  • On May 24, the Municipality of Zografou invites professional and amateur runners to the “Grigoris Lambrakis” municipal stadium to test their strength in the distances of 1,500, 3,000, and 5,000 meters. The races are aimed at clubs, free athletes, primary and secondary school children, as well as people with disabilities. In this way, emphasis is placed on both improving performance and inclusion and inclusiveness. It is estimated that the number of participants will reach 50,0 and the number of spectators will reach 1,000.
    Finally, on May 25, Kifissia is planning a special 5-kilometer night run and walk race at the I. Zirinis municipal gym. Young and old will have the opportunity to experience the magic of night sports in a warm, local celebration that aims to spread the running spirit and strengthen relationships through shared experience.

From memory and historical reference to daily exercise and inclusion, the May actions highlight sports as a profound social act.
