Cruise Takeoff in Chania – Record Arrivals in the First Quarter of 2025

  • Over 32,000 Passengers and 17 Ship Arrivals Recorded at the Port of Souda, Confirming Crete’s Rapid Rise on the Luxury Cruise Map

The first figures for the course of cruises in Chania in 2025 are impressive, with the Port of Souda recording a significant increase in both ship arrivals and passenger traffic. The picture of the first quarter of the year confirms the positive assessments of tourism operators for a strong boom in the sector, as 17 cruise ship arrivals have already taken place and 32,330 passengers have disembarked in the region.

The arrival of the luxurious Celebrity Infinity, of Celebrity Cruises, on the morning of Tuesday, April 29, marked the completion of the arrivals program for the period January-April. The impressive ship, 294 meters long, carried 2,152 passengers and is a typical example of the new profile of the cruise industry that is steadily developing in Crete: large companies, luxury boats, and high visitor income.

The comparison with previous years clearly reflects the progress:

  • In the first four months of 2024, 12 arrivals were recorded, with approximately 24,000 visitors
  • In 2023, in the same period, 10 arrivals and 20,000 passengers were recorded

The increase reaches 42% in arrivals and over 35% in passenger traffic, percentages that highlight the constantly strengthening dynamics of the port of Souda in the cruise sector and its upward trajectory in terms of international competition.

The steady integration of Chania in the itineraries of major brands, such as Celebrity Cruises, upgrades Crete’s position on the global map of luxury tourism, offering multiplier benefits to the local economy: from the strengthening of retail and catering, to transportation and experiential tourism activities.

According to estimates by the Chania Port Fund, over 100 cruise ship arrivals are expected for the remainder of 2025, which demonstrates the continued enhancement of the accessibility, recognition, and infrastructure of the destination.

The tourist world of Crete now sees cruising not only as a seasonal supplement but as a key pillar of development, with an emphasis on sustainability, quality, and the expansion of the tourist season.
