The issue of the early reopening of Kaiafas Baths is dynamically coming to the fore, against the backdrop of the increased tourist traffic expected to be recorded in the Zacharo area during this summer season. The issue has been highlighted by the local government and is finding wide resonance among tourism and hospitality professionals, but also among the residents themselves, who are calling for the reactivation of one of the most important development “tools” of the wider area.
The delayed start of operation of the Baths, which in recent years has consistently followed the July schedule, is, according to local bodies, an inhibiting factor in the effort to extend the tourist season. As they emphasize, thermal tourism can be a strong pillar for the region’s economy, especially at a time when sustainable tourism development and the strengthening of alternative forms of tourism remain the demand.
At the same time, there is talk of the significant potential offered by the Kaiafas complex, not only because of its thermal springs and long history, but also thanks to the unique natural landscape that surrounds it – a protected wetland of rare beauty and ecological value. The local authorities point out that the early start of operations would substantially contribute to the better utilization of the region’s tourism potential, while it would also give a boost to businesses that directly depend on the number of visitors to the baths.
In this context, the competent State bodies and the State Property Company, which owns the property, are requested to reconsider the possibility of early operation of the baths – ideally from June – in order to fully utilize the summer season. The issue is also linked to the need for timely staffing of the facilities, the completion of maintenance work and the improvement of the services offered, in order to meet the expectations of visitors and enhance the image of the destination.
