From June 1 to 8, the island of Nisyros is transformed into an outdoor laboratory of natural sciences, hosting the 4th Summer School, co-organized by the Nisyros Geopark and the Laboratory of Climatology and Atmospheric Environment of the National University of Athens.
In particular, the old Primary School in Emporios of Nisyros is planning to host a special educational and scientific experience from June 1 to 8: the 4th Summer School “Nisyros Summer School”. The action is a product of collaboration between the Municipal Public Benefit Enterprise of Nisyros (DIKEN), manager of the candidate UNESCO Geopark of Nisyros, with the National University of Athens and the Inter-Institutional Postgraduate Program “Water, Biosphere and Climate Change”.
The program involves postgraduate students, university professors, and researchers from Greece and abroad, covering fields such as climatology, oceanography, geology, ecology and forestry. Participants will be trained through lectures, workshops, and on-site observations on the geomorphological peculiarities and volcanic activity of Nisyros – a natural laboratory, as it is characterized.
A multi-thematic program on site
Every day, from Mandraki to Emporios, the program begins with thematic modules such as:
- Bioclimatic urban design and tourism,
- Climate change and drought, with rainwater management practices on the islands,
- Atmospheric pollution and energy autonomy,
- Geo-trails and volcanic history of Nisyros,
- Mediterranean lagoons and their management strategies.
Participants will be trained in field techniques, will carry out measurements of micro-bioclimatic parameters in residential areas, will make environmental measurements inside the volcano caldera, will practice using drones for 3D mapping, but will also analyze data with scientific methodology.
Highlights include:
- the presentation of forest fire prediction methods specifically for Greece,
- the application of dendrochronological techniques to reconstruct the climate of the last 200 years,
- the afternoon activity “Science Caf?”, which brings researchers into dialogue with the island’s residents.
Education with the volcano as a backdrop
The Nisyros Summer School combines theoretical teaching with on-site application, highlighting Nisyros not only as a field of research and educational activity but also as an example of a region that invests in knowledge, sustainability, and international scientific networking. By implementing this event, the island strengthens its profile as a center of geoscientific education and environmental awareness.
The event concludes with the presentation of the students’ thematic works and the awarding of certificates, while a special conference will present to the residents of Nisyros the results of the week, as well as the possibilities and prospects opened up by the island’s inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks.
