In the idyllic setting of Lake Kerkini, on Sunday, June 15, the Kerkini Lake Run 2025 athletic event is scheduled to take place, with the starting and finishing points at Limanaki Lithotopou, in the Municipality of Iraklia, which is just 9 kilometers from Iraklia, Serres. The event is co-organized, among others, by the Iraklia Athletic Club, with the aim of attracting runners and visitors who seek the coexistence of sports and natural beauty.
The program includes four routes of different levels and requirements, offering options for everyone. The start time of the event is at 07:00 and the end time is at 13:00.
In particular, the 21 km half-marathon route runs along the eastern embankment, offering participants a unique view of the lake and its natural environment. The 7.5 km race also runs on the same route, but on a smaller area, ideal for more amateur runners or those who want a shorter experience amidst the beauty of nature.
The 1 km route, on dirt terrain, runs on the Pine Hill – just opposite Limanaki – and is intended mainly for children or beginner runners, with a strong family character. Finally, the 10 km route follows an asphalt road towards the village of Kerkini, from the western side of the lake.
Beyond the athletic experience, participants and their companions will have the opportunity to get to know one of the most important ecosystems in Greece. Lake Kerkini, artificial but rich in biodiversity, is one of the most popular destinations for ecotourism. It is home to over 300 species of birds, including silver pelicans, herons, and flamingos, while buffalo, fish, and amphibians live in its waters and on its banks.
Nature lovers can enjoy boating, cycling, or simple walking routes around the lake, making the area ideal for a complete leisure experience and contact with the natural environment.
