An important meeting focusing on the potential of the Chelmos-Vouraikos Geopark and the dynamics of geotourism was held in Kalavryta, in the presence of representatives of the Western Greece Region, local government bodies and alternative tourism experts.
The event, entitled “Geotourism and Development Prospects – Alternative Forms of Tourism in the Chelmos-Vouraikos Geopark”, was organized by Achaia-Development S.A. and highlighted the strategies that promote a tourism that is gentler, more sustainable and deeply connected to the identity of the place.
The Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism Development, Panos Sakellaropoulos, referring to the role of the Geopark, emphasized that it is a natural and cultural treasure, with a strong geological identity and high visitor numbers, which can function as a pillar of tourism diversification and regional development. As he noted, “our goal is to cultivate a tourism model based on respect for the environment, the visitor experience and the support of local production and hospitality.”
The Chelmos – Vouraikos Geopark, recognized by UNESCO since 2015, offers a set of experiences that combine scientific value with entertainment and exploration. From the legendary Cog Railway route and the Vouraikos Gorge, to the caves, rare geomorphological phenomena, the Kalavryta Ski Center, the mountain lakes and the historic monasteries, the region composes an authentic and multi-layered tourist narrative.
The Region actively promotes the participation of the Geopark in European financial tools, such as the Interreg IPA ADRION program, strengthening cross-border cooperation and its visibility in international networks. At the same time, it supports actions that empower local communities, encourage agrotourism and strengthen local entrepreneurship with a focus on environmental respect and authenticity.
The message of the meeting was clear: Western Greece has the natural, cultural and institutional resources to develop a tourism model that looks to the future, without losing touch with the land, its history and tradition. Geotourism, as it turned out, is not just a form of thematic tourism – it is a new philosophy of visiting, staying and connecting with the place.
