Times | The 17 best Greek islands for families

The 17 ideal Greek islands for family tourism are recommended by the British Times, stating at the beginning of the feature that “like the ancient columns that supported the Parthenon for centuries, family relationships are the strong foundation of life in Greece. “Family is not just something important — it is everything,” says a local proverb. Certainly, the choice of child-friendly hotels and resorts, excellent Mediterranean cuisine, golden sand and guaranteed sunshine are the conditions that complete the “recipe” for successful summer holidays in Greece.

The international media outlet’s list includes Lefkada with its wide range of options, Santorini with its unique sea excursions, Zakynthos with its crystal clear waters, Kefalonia with its heavenly shores, Naxos with its exciting activities in nature and beaches, Skopelos with its delicious local cuisine, Corfu for exploration, Meganisi for peaceful holidays, picturesque Chalki and cinematic Amorgos.

The list is completed by Sifnos with its traditions, picturesque villages and churches, dreamy Paxos, neoclassical Symi, Crete with its countless quality options for families, exotic Milos, Paros with its alternative activities and timeless Rhodes. Destination representatives in the list refer to the characteristics that make their islands special. As the Deputy Mayor for Tourism of the Municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, Vangelis Katsaras, recently stated, “our visitors are satisfied with the price-quality ratio and are impressed by the range of options for vacationing on dozens of exotic beaches, touring beautiful picturesque villages, enjoying Naxos cuisine, learning about culture and centuries-old traditions, exploring a multitude of ancient monuments and medieval or Byzantine towers, and exercising in nature and our turquoise waters through activities such as hiking, cycling, windsurfing, diving, etc.”.

In the past, Sifnos had emerged as the most suitable family destination according to Travel & Leisure, with the deputy mayor of Tourism of the municipality, Yiannis Rafeletos, explaining that “our goal is for the traveler to get to know Sifnos through the eyes of a local and to experience our place not only in July and August, but also during the period before and after the high season, where the destination offers unique and authentic experiences.” Another destination on the list that has received significant international distinctions is Skopelos, which a few days ago was the focus of interest of French Vogue. The Municipal Councilor for Tourism of the Municipality of Skopelos, George Papadavid, had stated that “Skopelos invites the traveler to take the lead in his own vacation in order to experience ideal romantic moments, unique family vacations, activities in wonderful nature, gastronomic delights, entertainment in taverns and centers with live music, traditions, relaxation and excursions to villages, beaches and coves. Whatever our visitors choose, the common starting point of their journey will be quality, heartfelt hospitality and the passion of the locals.”
