Ithaca Municipality’s reaction to the ban on approaching Atokos Island

The strong reaction of the Ithaca Municipality is caused by the recent decision to prohibit approaching and disembarking at Atokos Island, one of the most emblematic natural landscapes of the Ionian Sea.

In a letter sent by the mayor of Ithaca, Dionysios Stanitsas, to the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy – with notification to the Ithaca Port Authority – the concern of not only the municipal authority, but also of residents, tourism professionals, visitors and fishermen is expressed.

“Atokos, although private, has been an integral part of the maritime, tourist and nature-loving identity of Ithaca and the Ionian for decades,” notes Mr. Stanitsas, pointing out that the sudden ban has serious consequences for tourist activity and the image of the region.

The municipality calls for the immediate review of the decision, through the cooperation of all stakeholders, in order to find a solution that will respect the ownership status of the island, but will at the same time ensure controlled and sustainable access for the public.

As it is emphasized, “free and sustainable accessibility to natural landscapes of high aesthetic value is a cornerstone of the region’s tourist development and must be treated with responsibility and respect for the public interest.”
