The importance of yesterday’s decision by the Coastal Transport Council (CTC) was highlighted in a post by the Governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Hadjimarkos, describing it as “special and important” for island Greece.
The CTC proposed to the Minister of Shipping the free travel of all athletes from amateur clubs on subsidized coastal ferry routes, satisfying a long-standing request that, as Mr. Hadjimarkos notes, “concerns many more people than we imagined.”
The South Aegean Region participated in the meeting through the Deputy Regional Governor of Cyclades, Giorgos Leontaritis, who had received relevant authorization from the Regional Council.
According to the data presented by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yiannis Vroutsis, the potential beneficiaries exceed 35,000 athletes from more than 650 clubs. The Minister of Shipping, Vasilis Kikilias, was positive towards the request from the first moment, “understood its value for the islanders, having a personal relationship with sports himself”, as the Regional Governor emphasized.
“To many, such news may seem small, but for the islands it is big”, concludes Mr. Hadjimarkos, underlining the particularity of insular Greece and the importance it has when its voice finds receptive ears.
