Lesvos is emerging as a model of educational tourism, offering students unique experiential experiences that combine history, culture, nature and everyday life. In fact, at a special event that took place in Athens, the island’s potential was presented at the “Students and Educational Communities in Lesvos” Conference, organized by the company Optimum Target, under the auspices of the North Aegean Region, the Municipality of Mytilene, the Municipality of West Lesvos, the Archdiocese of Athens and the Holy Metropolis of Mytilene.
The Deputy Mayor for Culture of West Lesvos, Zacharoula Ioakeim, presented the enormous potential of the region, characterizing it as “an open school of nature, culture and experiences”. As he stated, “Lesvos can inspire students, unite them through knowledge and creation and cultivate respect for history and the environment.”
Among the experiences offered by the island are:
- The Petrified Forest in Sigri and the Lesvos Geopark, which take children millions of years back in the history of the earth.
- The Rodafnidia in Lisvori, where the beginnings of human presence in the Aegean are captured.
- The walking routes that lead in the footsteps of Aristotle, study of flora and fauna and experiential familiarity with scientific observation.
- The archaeological sites, which tell the story of centuries of history and culture.
At the same time, students have the opportunity to participate in activities that connect knowledge with everyday life: bird watching, olive harvesting and learning about olive oil production, as well as contact with traditional arts, such as ceramics and woodcarving.
The conference highlighted that Lesvos has all the elements to become a reference point in student tourism, proposing a way of learning that combines education with experience, tradition with sustainability and culture with authenticity.
