With more than fifty events throughout the country and the participation of hundreds of citizens, young and old, the European Bird Day was celebrated this year, with the coordination of the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the cooperation of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA).
The action is part of the pan-European initiative EuroBirdwatch 2025, which is taking place simultaneously in more than thirty countries, with the aim of raising public awareness of bird migration and the need to protect their habitats.
At this point, it should be emphasized that the events in Greece included bird watching, educational workshops for children, tours, exhibitions, events and releases of cured birds in areas of particular natural beauty:
from the Dadia Forest and the Baths of Traianoupolis in Evros, Lake Kerkini in Serres and Nea Agathoupoli in Pieria, to Lake Koroneia, the Alykes of Kalloni in Lesvos, the Moustos Lagoon and Lake Taka in Arcadia, as well as the Alykes of Aigio wetland, the Kalamas Delta and the Kalogeros site in Stylida.
Participants had the opportunity to get to know the world of migratory birds and understand the enormous distances they travel every year, overcoming natural and human obstacles to reach their nesting or wintering grounds.
Migratory birds, as noted, are the true “travelers of our world.” They know no borders, crossing deserts, seas and mountains, constituting a living symbol of the unity of nature and the need for joint action against the climate crisis.
It is worth noting that, on the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day, OFYPEKA invited the public to see nature with a new eye, to observe the birds that live next to us and to enjoy a walk in the autumn Greek countryside, where even a small urban grove can hide the most beautiful surprises.
