The Municipality of Kalavryta is facing critical challenges that threaten not only the daily lives of its residents, but also the prospect of tourism development in an area with historical and natural value. Two recent resolutions of the Municipal Council reflect concern about the degradation of critical infrastructure, both in the health sector and in road safety.
The first resolution concerns the only Kalavryta Hospital-Health Center, which faces the risk of being fully integrated into the services of the larger Aigio Hospital, according to new instructions from the Ministry of Health. The administration and employees warn that the loss of autonomy will lead to further understaffing and a reduction in the services provided. Doctors who had decided to remain permanently in the area are reconsidering, as constant travel and limited resources make it difficult to maintain their lives and work in Kalavrita.
The importance of the Hospital for the mountainous municipality, the fourth largest in Greece, is vital. The 66 communities of the Municipality of Kalavrita are covered exclusively by this structure, which has 20 beds and basic laboratory equipment. Its operation is critical for residents with chronic health problems, but also for students, sports clubs, the ski resort and of course visitors. The Municipal Council is calling for the semi-autonomous operation of the hospital with reinforcement in personnel and equipment, in order to avoid further desertification of the area and to ensure the provision of high-quality health services.
The second resolution focuses on the critical road axis Kalavryta – Chalandritsa – Patras, which connects the mountainous Municipality with the capital of the Achaia prefecture. The road, which serves dozens of communities and professional activities, is characterized as dangerous due to its narrowness, dangerous curves and sharp elevation differences. The danger has led to many accidents, even during the transportation of students. The Municipal Council calls for the immediate upgrade of the road to a modern and safe, widened passage, with new studies, planning and securing funding from the Region of Western Greece.
Both issues are inextricably linked to tourism development: According to the municipality, the existence of a reliable health system and safe road infrastructure is a decisive factor for visitors. Without these, the area risks losing visitors seeking safety and services in cases of emergency, undermining investments and efforts to promote Kalavryta as a tourist destination.
The Municipal Council, with unanimous decisions, highlights the need for immediate action by the government and the Region of Western Greece, in order to ensure health and road safety, as well as the sustainable development of tourism in the area.
