Karpathos and Saria: Network of 25 hiking trails with European funding

The inclusion of the project “Upgrading hiking trails in Karpathos and Saria” in the Regional Programme “South Aegean 2021–2027”, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), marks another step towards the sustainable tourism development of the island.

The project, with a total budget of 247,876 euros, envisages the development and promotion of a network of 25 hiking trails, with a total length of 221.13 kilometers, in Karpathos and Saria. The action aims to exploit the unique natural and cultural characteristics of the region, enhancing alternative activity and promoting Karpathos as a destination for authentic experiences and walking tourism.

At this point, it should be emphasized that this specific action is part of the municipality’s strategy to extend the tourist season and promote gentle, sustainable tourism, with respect for the natural and cultural environment.

The interventions include:

  • improving the accessibility and cleaning of existing paths
  • marking with direction, location and information signs
  • removal of old signs and unification of the signage system
  • publicity and promotion actions for the new network

The implementation of the project begins on May 1, 2026 and will be completed by December 31, 2027.

The mayor of Karpathos, Michalis Fellouzis, expressed his satisfaction with the inclusion, emphasizing that “this is a substantial investment that strengthens the identity of Karpathos as a place of authentic experience and natural beauty.” At the same time, he thanked the Governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Hadjimarkos, for his steadfast support and contribution to the promotion of projects that strengthen the extroversion and sustainable development of the island.
