Monemvasia: Circular path and Via Ferrata in Kavos Mallia – New boost to hiking tourism

An innovative project that combines natural beauty with sustainable tourism development is underway in Kavos Mallia, Monemvasia. Within the framework of a Program Agreement between the Peloponnese Region, the Municipality of Monemvasia and the Development Organization of OTA Parnonas S.A., the implementation of the project: “Study of a path and Via Ferrata path in the Kavos Mallia area in the Municipality of Monemvasia” is progressing.

It is noted that “Via Ferrata” is a specially designed route on rocky terrain, equipped with metal supports and wire ropes, which allows visitors without technical climbing experience to move safely in difficult places.

In particular, the project envisages the creation of a circular path called Cavo Maleas Trail, which will connect the traditional settlement of Velanidia, the historic Lighthouse of Cape Maleas, the Monastery of Agia Irini, the Geopark of Agios Nikolaos and the petrified Palm Grove. At the same time, a Via Ferrata route is planned, according to the specifications of the Hellenic Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, which will connect the Lighthouse with the monastery, giving a new dimension to the climbing tourism of the region. The Region of Peloponnese, within the framework of its 2025 tourism strategy, gives priority to actions with a small ecological footprint and respect for biodiversity. This specific project will be designed with a non-invasive model, with materials compatible with the natural environment and in accordance with forest and environmental legislation. All interventions will be in harmony with the landscape, without altering the natural or cultural identity of the area.

This initiative is part of a wider network of hiking trails planned throughout the Peloponnese, with the aim of highlighting its mountainous wealth and promoting adventure tourism. By enhancing accessibility to areas of unique natural beauty and cultural interest, the project is expected to attract visitors from Greece and abroad, strengthening the local economy and creating new employment opportunities.

The connection of nature, tradition and outdoor activity transforms Kavos Mallias into an emerging pole of attraction for friends of alternative tourism and authentic experiences.
