Chania wins the cruise bet – “Souda on track to become a home port”, says D. Virirakis

Cruising in Chania is on an impressive course, with rates that prove that the destination has now established itself on the map of the major global cruise companies. As the president of the Port Fund of Chania, Dimitris Virirakis, told Tornos News, Chania is recording a 50% increase in cruise ship arrivals compared to the past, while the figures for 2026 and 2027 are forecast to set new records.

Strong momentum and two-year planning
There are already 220 cruise ship arrivals announced for 2026, compared to 200 the previous year, with the trend remaining upward. As Mr. Virirakis pointed out, “cruise programs are decided two years in advance, so what we see today is the result of earlier strategic work.” For 2025, Chania is expected to welcome more than 400,000 cruise visitors, with a significant impact on the local economy, since – according to studies – each passenger spends an average of 50 euros in the market, while 90% declare an intention to return.

The factors of success
“Chania’s success is not accidental,” emphasizes the president of the Port Fund. “We have a very good and safe port, easy to use for ships and passengers. At the same time, we have a destination with authentic and beautiful places that fascinate travelers.”

At this point, it should be emphasized that the political stance of the region during the pandemic also played a decisive role. As Mr. Virirakis explains to TN, “when cruise ships were under persecution, we in Chania offered them shelter and anchorage. This attitude was duly appreciated and today the companies reciprocate with their presence.”

He also adds that the Souda Port Fund invested in targeted public relations and participation in international cruise exhibitions, building an image of reliability and hospitality that opened new avenues of cooperation.

From 40 to 220 ships in a decade
It is now a given that the development of cruises in Chania is remarkable. In 2011, the port of Souda welcomed only 40 ships. Today, this number has increased fivefold, with 220 arrivals per year, confirming that the region is developing into a strong hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The new passenger terminal in Souda
With an eye on the future, the project of the new passenger terminal in Souda, which aspires to transform the port into a home port, is in a maturation phase. “We have the permit, a contractor has been selected and a way has been found to replenish the financing through the Recovery Fund. It is only a matter of time before the project starts,” said Mr. Virirakis, emphasizing that the home port operation will increase the economic benefits for the region fivefold.

The expansion of the Adria pier is on the horizon
At the same time, as the president of the Port Fund revealed to TM, after twenty years of studies and licensing, the expansion of the Adria pier, with a budget of 25 million euros, is progressing. “The project is mature, all that remains is to find the final financing resources,” he noted.

The cruise as the living pulse of the local economy
In any case, the appeal of the cruise is also reflected in the everyday life of the city. As Mr. Virirakis mentioned, the businessmen of the old city communicate with the Port Fund to be informed “how many visitors to expect” in order to organize their reserves in time.

Souda, with strategic patience and a ten-year plan, seems to be winning the bet. With new infrastructure at its gates and a continuous increase in arrivals, Chania is charting a steady course towards a new era in cruising, where the hospitality and insight of the local community translate into substantial development for the entire island of Crete, as emphasized.
