The heart of hiking tourism in Crete beat in Apokoronas, where the Region of Crete presented the developing Chania Trails network to invited journalists, tour operators and trail design experts. The action is part of the Region’s overall strategy to transform the island into a leading destination for experiential and nature-loving tourism, with a reference point on the trails that connect the natural wealth with the authenticity of the place.
The familiarization trip (Fam Trip), which took place in the municipality of Apokoronas, was organized by the Region of Crete in collaboration with the municipality and Paths of Greece, which has undertaken the study and overall design of the trail network in the Regional Unit of Chania.
During the event, participants had the opportunity to get to know selected routes of Apokoronas up close and to learn about the interventions designed within the framework of the Chania Trails program, which aims to promote Crete as an international reference point for hiking and nature lovers.
At this point, it should be emphasized that the project of the trail network does not only concern the development of a tourist infrastructure, but also the strengthening of local identity, the interconnection of mountainous and coastal settlements and the promotion of a model of sustainable development that respects the environment and communities.
The Region of Crete and the municipality of Apokoronas pointed out that the cooperation of all stakeholders is crucial for the success of the project, while Paths of Greece thanked for the invitation and the excellent organization, emphasizing that the collective effort is the cornerstone for establishing Crete on the global map of hiking tourism.
