Around 130,000 people visited the Kourtaliotis Gorge in the prefecture of Rethymno this year, during the first year of implementation of the new visitor management model introduced by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) in collaboration with the municipality of Agios Vasilios of Rethymno. The model, as announced, includes the introduction of an entrance ticket and measures to enhance visitor safety.
As part of this collaboration, OFYPEKA provided the municipality with one thousand safety helmets, which will be available as personal protective equipment to visitors to the gorge. This move is part of the overall effort to protect the natural area and ensure the visitor experience, while also serving the municipality’s civil protection personnel.
In a recent meeting between the mayor of Agios Vasilios, Yiannis Tatarakis, and OFYPEKA executives, issues related to the management and promotion of the gorge were discussed in detail, as well as the progress of the projects and studies that are to be implemented in the near future.
Among the planned interventions are landscaping and infrastructure creation works on the existing path, in order to improve accessibility and safety for visitors. At the same time, the study of the delimitation of the watercourse from the sources of Agios Nikolaos to the mouth of the river in the palm forest of Preveli is progressing, as well as the preliminary study of the unification of the Kourtaliotis and Preveli gorges.
It should also be emphasized that the Kourtaliotis Gorge is one of the most important natural destinations in Crete, with unique geomorphology and rich biodiversity. These interventions, as pointed out by OFYPEKA, are part of a comprehensive plan for the protection and sustainable promotion of the natural environment of the area.
